Examples of Physical Abuse Towards Parents
School staff may downplay the parent's concerns or knowledge about their child's disability, making them feel incompetent or insignificant.
Belittling or undermining:
Teachers or principals may blame parents for their child's behaviour or academic struggles, making them feel responsible for things beyond their control.
Blame and guilt-tripping:
School personnel might ignore or dismiss valid concerns raised by parents about their child's education or well-being, invalidating their experiences and concerns.
Ignoring or dismissing concerns:
Deliberately withholding information about the child's progress, behaviour, or school-related matters can leave parents feeling excluded and powerless.
Withholding information:
Using intimidating language or making threats to coerce parents into complying with school policies or decisions can create a hostile and fearful environment.
Intimidation or threats:
School staff may manipulate situations or information to manipulate parents into making certain decisions or accepting certain outcomes regarding their child's education.
Manipulation:
Excluding parents from important discussions or decision-making processes related to their child's education can leave them feeling isolated and marginalised.
Isolation:
Invalidating parents' concerns or experiences, making them doubt their perceptions or memories, is a form of gaslighting that can undermine their confidence and self-esteem.
Gaslighting:
Singling out parents of children with disabilities for criticism or blame, either directly or indirectly, can create a sense of isolation and alienation within the school community.
Scapegoating:
Failing to acknowledge or celebrate the achievements or progress of children with disabilities, or attributing their successes solely to school interventions, can diminish the parent's role and contribution to their child's growth and development.
