Examples of Social Abuse Towards Parents

 

Deliberately excluding parents from school events, meetings, or activities, making them feel isolated and marginalised within the school community.

Exclusion from school events:

 

Restricting parents' access to important information about their child's education, progress, or support services, preventing them from being fully informed and involved in their child's schooling.

Limiting access to information:

 

Allowing or perpetuating the exclusion or ostracism of parents of children with disabilities by other parents or members of the school community, fostering a sense of isolation and alienation.

Ostracism by other parents:

 

Ignoring or consistently disregarding attempts by parents to communicate or engage with school staff, leaving them feeling ignored and disrespected.

Ignoring communication attempts:

 

Communicating selectively with parents of children with disabilities, withholding information or updates that are readily shared with other parents, creating a sense of inequality and unfair treatment.

Selective communication:

 

Using derogatory language or labelling parents of children with disabilities in a derogatory manner, reinforcing negative stereotypes and prejudices within the school community.

Labelling or stereotyping:

 

Excluding parents from decision-making processes or consultations related to their child's education, disregarding their input and expertise as valuable members of the educational team.

Exclusion from decision-making:

 

Forming cliques or exclusive groups among parents or staff members, excluding parents of children with disabilities from participating or feeling welcome within these social circles.

Clique formation:

 

Disregarding or undermining parental authority or decisions regarding their child's education or well-being, eroding parents' confidence and sense of control.

Undermining parental authority:

 

Publicly humiliating or shaming parents of children with disabilities in front of other parents, students, or school staff, causing embarrassment and distress.

Public humiliation:
